History of the Typeface The original Clarendon was drawn in the s by Benjamin Fox for the Fann Street type foundry of London. It is said that the name came from the Clarendon Press at Oxford. Early Clarendon fonts were used primarily as titling and display faces, where their strong and sturdy nature shined. It was a morning for outrageous masks, spectacular costumes, whip-cracking strongmen, rocking horse jousts, lovely ladies and regal romeos dancing in the streets and fun everywhere as Kediri celebrated Muharram, the Islamic New Year’s Day on Thursday (15 Nov).

© Toby etc. All Rights Reserved. Fann Street is a street in the City of London. It runs west-east, from its junction with Aldersgate Street and Goswell Road in the west, to the junction with Golden Lane in the east.

The name has no connection with the making of fans as is suggested by the plaque placed by the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers on the Jewin Chapel in this street, but in its original form of Fann's.

It is not easy to say how far Reed was involved in the practical side of the foundry, but there is a surviving document, of which the title page is shown above, that gives us a fascinating hint: the handwritten ‘Catalogue of Hand Moulds’ of the Fann Street Foundry dated which is among materials that came to the Type Museum, London, with documents from.
